I just wanted you to know that I won my first round of Sainsburys Big Bake Off and am now through to the semi finals. The judge was Jamie Oliver and he loved my dish. The next stage is where a French pastry chef called Eric Lanlard is going to come and show us some dessert on Tuesday which we have to replicate on Wednesday and serve to members of the local community in Gloucester and then they get to decide which desserts they liked and choose the winner. But for some reason they want me to make my dish and not the dessert. In fact they want me to make 2 rings instead of one. Anyway, I wanted to thank you for all your advice and help and encouragement. I really owe you a big Thank You!!I am attaching a picture of the dish to show you how I presented it.

I've been really inspired by the breadmaking we have been doing on the course so I've left my breadmaker gathering dust and been making bread by hand all week. I've made three batches of wholemeal bread (with and without the walnuts to suit Kyle!) I've also made some shortbread biscuits using vanilla and lemon flavourings which were delicious. I've taken Gaye's advice and left a batch in the freezer, which was great when a friend came around – I could defrost them quickly and pop them in the oven.
We're all looking forward to today's session (Saturday 18 June) since Kyle can make one of his favourite meals, lasagne and Jamila is keen to see the apple strudel.

Alice, I am incredibly proud of you. I think it is a truly amazing achievement for anyone let alone someone as young as yourself. A role model to all aspiring young cooks!

Hugh has really enjoyed the Community kitchen courses at Wallington Girls High School. Each week we make a new dish and learn new techniques which is always fun particularly doing it with loads of other families. Hugh (age 9) has benefited by making a loaf of bread every week at the the class and has gone from being reticent about bread-making to enthusiastic and confident.

I had booked in with my niece, but she couldn’t make it on the day. Very glad I went along anyway, it was good to see kids and adults cooking alongside each other. The kids really took some pride in what they were doing and from what I saw, many had good results.

My first task was to prepare a shepherds pie, according to master cooking coach Gaye Whitwam’s ‘special’ recipe and I must say it was very tasty for supper. My second effort was to make a loaf of bread. The dough took quite a bit of kneading to get it to just the right consistency, but it paid off nicely. There was plenty of workspace at each of our stations and Gaye came around regularly to check on our progress and to offer encouragement and suggestions.

A very nice touch, was a local farm delivering a couple of boxes of organic produce while we were there, some of which we were able to use in our recipes. I sautéed a batch of swiss chard, which the rest of the class tasted and one of the other adults made a vegetable soup that we all sampled. There was good interaction among the class, a good community feeling.

All in all, it was a very rewarding experience that I would highly recommend to others.

This was a fantastic recipe for the Greek spinach pie, the children (and adults) really enjoyed making it as it was quite different to anything they had made before. It was really delicious too and we will definitely try and make it again. Laura has actually eaten cabbage again this week which is amazing. After cooking it at the class she has discovered that it actually tastes nice, but only the way SHE makes it!
